But Plumlee’s experience against the Nets underscored concerns about the Knicks’ frontcourt depth, and Noah has missed significant parts of the past two seasons with knee and shoulder injuries. When healthy, he is a premier rim protector. The Knicks are also expected to depend on Noah this season. Rose required surgery and was subsequently sidelined for the entire 201213 season. In the first round of the 2012 NBA playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, Rose tore his ACL in his left knee. “These guys all know that to be great players they need to be in top shape, and they put in extra work,” Hornacek said. 2 Rose has struggled with significant knee injuries since his 201011 MVP season. In a moment of ill-advised candor at training camp, Rose said that he planned to do “penitentiary workouts” in his hotel room during the trial. Hornacek said he was confident that Rose would stay in shape. Rose, a former most valuable player, has had a series of knee injuries, but the Knicks are banking on his ability to remain on the court. “There’s constant dialogue,” Hornacek said. Hornacek said the team had been keeping in touch with Rose. The woman, a former girlfriend of Rose’s, is seeking more than $21 million in damages. Over the weekend, he remained in California, where he and two co-defendants in a civil trial are accused of raping a woman. Rose also missed Saturday’s game, a 116-98 victory, and is unlikely to play against the Washington Wizards on Monday. ![]() “But they’re veteran guys, and the guys that they’re going to be out there on the court with are veteran guys. “Obviously, if those guys were here, we’d have a little more of that cohesion and chemistry going,” Hornacek said, referring to Noah and Rose. On Sunday, after practice and a courtside chat with Phil Jackson, the team president, Hornacek reiterated the realities of the situation. The past couple of weeks have been no different, even as Coach Jeff Hornacek provides a stabilizing influence, a source of calm in choppy waters. In other words, the Knicks are accustomed to obstacles and distractions, to self-inflicted drama that unfolds before they even give the regular season a chance to begin. By February, he was out of a job after having steered the team to a 23-31 start to the season. Fisher, who was then the Knicks’ coach, became tabloid fodder for weeks. About this time a year ago, Derek Fisher and Matt Barnes were getting into a dust-up in Los Angeles over Fisher’s relationship with Barnes’s estranged wife. Given the team’s current situation, it might be worth recalling some recent history. As Noah put it last week, “Nothing’s perfect.” Center Joakim Noah continues to work his way back from a hamstring injury, and point guard Derrick Rose will spend his foreseeable future in Los Angeles, dealing with his well-chronicled legal troubles. He’s never let his stature hold him back, and that’s why he’s so good. The Knicks have spent recent days going about the unvarnished business of preseason basketball without two starters. He has an immense amount of athleticism, but his skill and IQ are both important too. Even so, that’s never held him back from succeeding at the highest level. Rose has never been an oversized or large player. Being able to reach up over defenders to reach shots that would normally be unblockable adds another layer of versatility and skill to his already impressive toolbox. Rose’s arms are critical to his game because they allow him to play much bigger than his frame. That’s a staggering discrepancy, especially in a league where most players only have arms that are one inch longer than their body. His arms stretch out to 6’8 making them a full five inches past his height. However, what truly pushed him over the edge was his wingspan. He was someone who exploded to the rim early and often. Unlike a lot of modern points, he didn’t make a career out of sitting back and shooting threes. Both of those are well above average.īeing able to jump makes a huge difference in the NBA, especially for guards like Rose. The guard hit a max vertical of 40 inches and had a standing no-step vertical of 35.5 inches. He used to be incredibly fast, talented, and was an amazing jumper. Something else that made Rose so special was his raw athleticism. It was a great formula, and one that worked beautifully for the former MVP. He first relied heavily on quickness to get past defenders, and then used his strong frame to hang in the air or finish tough layups. Those dimensions helped him properly develop his game and allowed him to succeed across numerous years. He stands 6’3 and clocks in at a solid 200 pounds. Rose is not terribly small for a point guard, but he’s still on the shorter side of NBA players.
